IRS scam calls return again as tax season begins

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — A scam that remains popular year after year is back. Police departments, sheriff's offices, and attorney general's offices across the country are sending out warnings about an expected spike in calls from someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service. In Augusta County, deputies say an elderly Verona woman fell victim to the scam and lost over $4,000. The scam usually starts with a phone call from someone claiming they're with the IRS telling you that you owe money and will be arrested if you refuse to follow instructions.
