NHP, SLTPD warn of scam where callers pose as police

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KOLO)– The South Lake Tahoe Police Department warns people about someone posting as a current or past member of the department asking them to wire money to avoid prosecution. Police announced the scam Friday. It is similar to a scam in December when someone called a business asking for money to avoid prosecution. On Friday, police said the caller tells the would-be victim they are the subject of an investigation or a person of interest and asks them to send money to avoid prosecution, usually through Western Union or using a pre-loaded cash gift card.
