Paul Hoskinson, 55, was able to turn tragedy into opportunity on May 27, 2017, when his best friend ran into some serious trouble, quite literally. Hoskinson, a former competitive skier and high-altitude backcountry alpinist, was skiing with friends and dog Remi, a three-year-old German shorthaired pointer on Independence Pass, near Aspen, Colorado. Remi normally followed in Hoskinson’s ski tracks during runs, but on this day, avalanche debris and heavy snow caused Hoskinson to ski slower than usual. Halfway down a steep run, something Hoskinson describes as “horrific” happened: Remi caught up to him, and the sharp edge of Hoskinson's ski collided with her right leg.
